Lorries on the A24 motorway: rules and rates for e-TOL

Driving a lorry, coach or other heavy vehicle on the A24 Blankenburg Connection? Then you fall into the heavy class and pay a higher toll than passenger vehicles. This article sets out the current rates on the A24, rules for heavy traffic and payment options for transport companies.

Two vehicle classes on the A24

On the A24, a distinction is made between two classes:

  • Light vehicles (up to and including 3,500 kg): €1.57 per passage
  • Heavy vehicles (above 3,500 kg): €9.49 per passage

Lorries, coaches and other heavy motor vehicles above 3,500 kg fall into the heavy class. Electric vehicles with a maximum authorised mass above 4,250 kg also fall into the heavy class.

Distinction: e-TOL on the A24 versus the national lorry charge

From 1 July 2026, a national lorry charge applies in the Netherlands for freight traffic on national roads. Important to know: the A24 Blankenburg Connection is explicitly excluded from this national lorry charge. The e-TOL on the A24 is a separate charge, independent of the national system, and is based on licence plate recognition via overhead gantries with cameras.

Lorry drivers using the A24 pay only the e-TOL of €9.49 per passage. This amount is adjusted annually for inflation. Separate rules and rates apply for the national lorry charge on other national roads.

Vehicle class determined automatically via licence plate recognition

Above the A24 hang overhead gantries with cameras that register your licence plate. Based on the registered vehicle data, the system automatically determines whether your vehicle falls into the light or heavy class. You do not need to configure anything yourself.

No extra toll for trailers and semi-trailers

Transport operators do not pay an extra toll amount for trailers, semi-trailers or caravans. Only the towing vehicle is charged. This also applies to lorries with a loaded semi-trailer.

Payment options for transport companies

There are two ways to pay e-TOL:

  1. Per passage via e-TOL.nl: from 7 days before the passage up to and including 72 hours (3 days) after the passage.
  2. Automatically via MOVE-IZI: register your licence plates once. The toll is then automatically settled each time you pass the A24.

Via MOVE-IZI you can add and manage multiple licence plates through one account. Convenient for transport companies with a fleet. At MOVE-IZI you pay no extra service charges, only the official toll amount.

Consequences of late payment

Do you not pay on time? Then a payment reminder follows with €9.00 administration costs from e-TOL. If you still do not pay (or do not pay in full), a fine of €35.00 may follow, in addition to the outstanding toll amount. Automatic payment via MOVE-IZI prevents this.

Alternative route available

Transport operators who wish to avoid the toll can always choose an alternative route. The A24 is not the only connection in the Rotterdam region. Check Rijkswaterstaat's travel information for the current traffic situation.

For transport companies with multiple vehicles using the A24 daily, automatic payment via MOVE-IZI is the most efficient solution. A detailed overview per month, per vehicle and per passage is available in the account. This simplifies administration and makes cost allocation to clients or departments easier.

Drivers do not need to do anything

A practical advantage for transport companies: the driver does not need to do anything when passing the A24. There is no button in the cab, no app on the phone and no paperwork at the office. The overhead gantries with cameras register the licence plate automatically while the lorry drives through. Payment is processed in the background via MOVE-IZI. This reduces the administrative burden for both the driver and the planner.
