The A24 Blankenburg Connection: new toll road in South Holland

The A24 Blankenburg Connection is a motorway in the Rotterdam region connecting the A15 at Rozenburg with the A20 at Vlaardingen. The connection was built to improve the accessibility of the Rotterdam region and reduce traffic pressure on existing routes. The core of the connection is the Blankenburg tunnel, which passes under the Nieuwe Waterweg.

The road is also known as the Blankenburg tunnel or the A24 tunnel. You can always choose an alternative route: paying toll is never mandatory.

The A24 is part of the Multi-Year Infrastructure, Spatial Planning and Transport Programme (MIRT) and is financed through a public-private partnership. The toll partly covers the construction and operating costs. This makes the A24 unique: it is the first Dutch motorway where road users contribute directly to the infrastructure they use.

How e-TOL works on the A24 Blankenburg Connection

The A24 has no toll booths or barriers. Above the road are steel structures with cameras that automatically read your registration number. Based on this, the system determines whether your vehicle falls in the light or heavy class. You drive straight through, without stopping.

Data is processed in accordance with the privacy regulations (GDPR). You have two ways to pay:

  • Per trip via e-TOL.nl: from 7 days before to 72 hours after your trip.
  • Automatically via a provider such as MOVE-IZI: register once, then nothing more to do.

After your trip you have a maximum of 72 hours to pay via e-TOL.nl. With automatic payment via MOVE-IZI this deadline is fully covered: as soon as your registration number is recorded, processing starts automatically. You will not receive any separate reminders for late payment.

Current toll amounts on the A24 Blankenburg Connection

The toll amounts on the A24 depend on the class of your vehicle:

Light vehicles (up to and including 3,500 kg)

EUR 1.57 per trip.

This includes cars, vans, campers and motorcycles. Electric vans up to and including 4,250 kg also fall in this class.

Heavy vehicles (above 3,500 kg)

EUR 9.49 per trip.

This includes lorries, buses and other heavy motor vehicles. Electric vehicles above 4,250 kg also fall in the heavy class.

No extra toll is charged for trailers, semi-trailers and caravans.

The toll amounts are adjusted annually via an inflation correction. The current toll amount is always shown on the MOVE-IZI Toll and Pricing page and on the official e-TOL website.

Who pays e-TOL on the A24?

Everyone who uses the A24 pays e-TOL. This also applies to vehicles with a foreign registration number. There is no exception for electric vehicles, although the class classification may differ from combustion engine vehicles.

Prepaid or postpaid: two clear options

MOVE-IZI offers two payment options: prepaid and postpaid.

Prepaid payment

Prepaid means you load credit in advance, manually or via automatic top-up. This way you always have insight into your remaining balance.

Postpaid payment

Postpaid means you drive first and pay later via direct debit or credit card. Depending on your payment method, you receive a weekly or monthly invoice.

Both options are available without extra service fees on top of the official toll amount.

For families or businesses with multiple vehicles, MOVE-IZI offers the option to manage all registration numbers under one account. Every trip is recorded per registration number, so you always know which vehicle has incurred which costs.

Automatic payment with MOVE-IZI

With MOVE-IZI you register your registration number once and link a payment method. Every time you pass the A24, the toll is automatically charged. You only pay the official toll amount, without extra service fees.

You choose how you want to pay: prepaid (load credit in advance, manually or automatically) or postpaid via direct debit or credit card. Never want to think about A24 toll payments again? Register your registration number with MOVE-IZI and let every toll trip be processed automatically.

Consequences of late payment on the A24

If you do not pay on time, a reminder for late payment follows with EUR 9.00 administrative costs from e-TOL. A penalty of EUR 35.00 may then follow, in addition to the outstanding toll amount. With automatic payment via MOVE-IZI you avoid this risk completely.

What to do if you receive an unexpected reminder for late payment from e-TOL?

If you receive a reminder for late payment from e-TOL.nl while you are already paying automatically via MOVE-IZI, pay the amount on time to avoid extra costs and then contact MOVE-IZI customer service. They will check whether the trip was processed correctly and resolve any double payments.
