A24 e-toll with a lease or rental car: how to get it right

The A24 is not an ordinary motorway. You pay e-toll here via current A24 toll rates. The system checks whether your plate is linked to an active registration with a recognised service provider like MOVE-IZI, or that you have paid per trip via e-TOL.nl.

If your plate is not registered and you have not paid, you will receive a payment reminder with 9.00 euro in administrative costs on top of the original toll amount. If that is also not paid, a penalty surcharge of 35.00 euro may be imposed. For drivers using their own car, registration is often already arranged. For lease and rental cars, this is often not the case.

Lease car: has your employer arranged e-toll?

Some leasing companies or employers arrange e-toll centrally for their fleet via MOVE-IZI or another recognised service provider. Others do not and expect the driver to arrange their own registration. It is therefore not automatic that your lease car is already registered.

If you regularly drive the A24 but no one has registered the plate, you are driving without valid payment each time. Payment reminders add up quickly.

Rental car: you are responsible, not the rental company

With a rental car it is even clearer. The rental company is not responsible for your e-toll payments during the rental period. You are the driver and you are driving on the toll road. So you will receive the bill if something goes wrong.

Rental companies sometimes indicate that a toll package is included. But this is not always the case and conditions vary per provider. Read this carefully before you leave. If there is no toll package, register the rental car plate temporarily in your MOVE-IZI account in advance. Once finished with the rental car, simply remove the plate from your account.

How to register a temporary vehicle with MOVE-IZI?

MOVE-IZI is designed to be quick and easy. Create an account with your personal details and payment preference. Then add a vehicle using the number plate. The A24 works exclusively via number plate recognition, no extra device in the car needed.

For a rental car, enter the plate and set the start date. The registration is then active. When you drive on the toll road, the system recognises your plate and payment is processed automatically. After the rental period, remove the plate from your account.

What if you forgot and already drove?

It can happen. You can still pay a trip via e-TOL.nl, but this must be within 72 hours of the trip. If you do not pay within that time, a payment reminder with 9.00 euro in administrative costs follows. If that is also not paid, a penalty surcharge of 35.00 euro may be imposed.

Important: when you sign up with MOVE-IZI, this does not automatically pay previous trips for which you have not yet paid. Those must be settled separately via e-TOL.nl within the applicable 72-hour window.

FAQ: e-toll with a lease or rental car

Do I need to arrange e-toll myself as a lease driver?

That depends on your employer or leasing company. Some arrange it centrally. Others do not. Ask your employer or lease manager. If no one has arranged it, register your plate yourself via MOVE-IZI.

What if the rental car already has a toll package?

Always check this when picking up the car. Ask the rental company explicitly whether their toll package also applies to the A24. If unclear, register the plate yourself temporarily in your MOVE-IZI account to be sure.

Can I also register a foreign rental car?

Yes, that is possible. You need the foreign plate and select the correct country during registration. If you need help, MOVE-IZI customer service is available.
